A simple cold email sequence

To start, cold emails should have this simple structure:

Email #1 - Your quick introduction

Subject: {{lead.name}} + [YOUR COMPANY]

Hi, my name is Nick with [YOUR COMPANY].

We help [SPECIFIC COMPANY TYPE] with [ONE LINER].

I wanted to learn how you handle [THING YOUR COMPANY HANDLES] at {{lead.name}} and show you what we're working on.

[ASK FOR A QUICK CALL TOMORROW AFTERNOON].

The structure is simple because you want only one thing to happen. That one thing is a quick call as soon as possible. Don't use the email to explain everything you do. All of that information should be on your website, which they almost always go check out before they decide to reply.

Email #2 - The follow-up email

Keep in mind that you are asking someone for time out of their busy schedule. Handle the situation with care and make it simple for them. Stop asking them if they got your previous email. They did. They just chose to ignore it.

Move on and just directly seek out what you’re looking for:

Subject: {{lead.name}} Follow Up

Friendly follow up.

I wanted to show you how [YOUR COMPANY] can help you [THAT THING YOUR PRODUCT/SERVICES HELPS YOU WITH]. Do you have a few minutes for a quick call later this week?

Please pick a time that works best for you.

Make it super simple for the prospect to respond with what you want by adding your scheduling link directly into the email body and make it stand out with short content.

Email #3 - The choices follow-up email

Subject: Quick feedback?

I've reached out in the past about scheduling a meeting with you but failed to make it happen. I'm going to assume either that you're either:

  1. Happy with your current [PRODUCT/SERVICE]
  2. Too busy to talk to me right now
  3. I'm reaching out to the wrong person

Simply reply to this email with the number that best fits your situation.

Yes, these email templates are short and easy to remember and could just as easily be sent as an individual email. However, the reason they are templates is not necessarily for the content. They are templates to help your team figure out which type of email yields the best results and continue the follow-up sequence with your prospects.

An advanced email sequence

Incorporate cold calling your opportunities into your email sequence workflow as an effective way to get a quick response.

When they don’t answer your call, it’s best to not a leave a voicemail. Voicemails are annoying, leave a big footprint, and nobody checks them anymore.

Send them an individual email message instead:

Email #1 - Personal follow-up to a call

Subject: Today's call

I just tried giving you a call. I wanted to show you how [YOUR COMPANY] can help you [THAT THING YOUR PRODUCT/SERVICES HELPS YOU WITH]. Do you have a few minutes for a quick call later this week?:

Weds @ 11am EST
Tuesday @ 2pm EST
Thursday @ 3pm EST

Make it super simple for the prospect to respond with what you want by adding specific meeting times into the email. Adding three explicit times for a call implies that you wrote this email for them specifically. It implies you looked at your calendar and sought out three openings for yourself. Make sure to use the prospect's local timezone - don't make them figure it out.

Next, schedule your email sequence as a follow-up reminder if you don't get a reply from your original email within a certain number of days.

I tried giving you call last week but wasn't able to connect so I wanted to share some information about [YOUR COMPANY]. In this blog post, [RELEVANT BLOG POST/CONTENT]. We are a [INDUSTRY/TYPE OF PRODUCT] that [DOES WHAT THE BLOG POST SAYS].

In the end, we beat out the competition. Let's explore if [YOUR COMPANY] is right for you. Pick a time for a personal call to learn more.

Email Sequence Template #2 - The follow-up email

I don’t like to beat around the bush or waste anyone’s time so if we’re not a good fit, I’ll end the call right away.

[RESOURCE 1]
[RESOURCE 2]
[RESOURCE 3]

Don’t worry, I’ll reach back out in a month to check in.

Set the expectation that you will continue to follow-up and luckily, our email sequences make it easy to keep that promise! You can automatically trigger a new sequence when this one ends. Set a delay on the first step of the sequence to continue the prospecting with the same contact one month later.

Again, keep your email templates simple, easy to read, and straight to the point to accomplish your goal. The email is more likely to get read when it looks and feels like a handcrafted email written specifically for the person receiving it. When a prospect replies they are immediately opted out of further emails and you can send more detailed information at that point.

Now you have the opportunity to focus your full attention on the prospect without any additional, distracting emails!
